As an Infrastructure Engineer at Orb, you will be responsible for designing and maintaining product features that require deeply understanding reliable and scalable systems. The infrastructure team works on every part of the stack and ships product quickly. Notably, this is not an auxiliary or support team; at Orb, performant infrastructure is a core part of the offering.

Orb has a broad range of infrastructure challenges that you’ll tackle in concert with our team. Some examples of work you might do at Orb include:

Building and scaling our data ingestion pipelines to support ever increasing data volumes. We ingest anywhere from 100 million to one billion events an hour and expect to see massive growth over the next year. These data pipelines need to be incredibly robust; the accuracy of every event counts.

Understanding how to scale query throughput against our specialized datastores in service of product features like real-time alerting while maintaining maximum flexibility in metrics customers can define. This allows our customers to implement usage limits and spend management through Orb.

Providing the most performant and flexible APIs to our customers and their end users, so they can build experiences that leverage usage data stored in Orb.

Building simple and reusable system-level components to serve as a foundation for other engineers. For example, designing and building a robust rate and cost limiting strategy across Orb’s API.

This is an opportunity to be the foundation of our infrastructure team, so you’ll lay the groundwork for both technical process and product investments. Your early work on our infrastructure stack will be key for the next decade of scaling Orb’s product. 

About You
You have 4+ years of experience in software engineering, specifically with 2+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering

# 💻 Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Engineering Lead, you will be expected to be responsible for the entire software engineering process for your assigned projects. Responsibilities include:

- Implementing new full-stack features for use by our members and internally by our staff in TypeScript, Vue.Js, PostgreSQL on the Supabase platform.
- Learning, experimenting with, and teaching the rest of the team about new technologies and strategies for solving business problems. Some business problems include:
    - Measuring, benchmarking, and improving existing **image** and **text/LLM** models.
    - Estimate compatibility between our members using these estimates on profile images and textual profile data.
- Designing software-based solutions given engineering requirements using techniques appropriate for the problem, such as:

About the Role

Building upon Reverse ETL’s ability to use SQL to sync to any SaaS tool, Customer Studio is Hightouch’s second major product that provides a purpose-built no-code suite of features that enables anyone, regardless of their SQL experience, to activate data directly from their warehouse. Despite being a small team (3 engineers, 1 PM, 1 designer), Customer Studio is our fastest growing product and already accounts for nearly half of our revenue, which also gives this role the potential to have significant impact!

We’re looking to add a product-minded backend engineer to the team. The ideal candidate will be comfortable diving deep into backend and distributed systems and think holistically about architecture, scalability, maintainability, and reliability. We also are looking for someone with strong customer and product thinking and who feels comfortable writing and engaging with product specs.

Some of the problems we’ll be working on include:

Data Warehouse Performance: We’re consistently pushing the limits of what data warehouses can handle in terms of speed, performance, and interactivity. We explore optimizations generally (e.g. optimizing queries, storing pre-computed state), as well as investigate warehouse-specific improvements.
Analytics and Experimentation: How can Hightouch help customers build segments and decide what data they want to sync? How can we facilitate experimentation to downstream tools, including tracking the performance of different audiences?
Real-time Audience Syncing: Our users are always interested in faster syncing and fresher data. As warehouses become more real-time and adopt technologies like CDC, we’re excited to explore real-time audience computation and syncing.
Generative AI: We’re continuously working on making the user experience of acting on data more seamless, and are optimistic generative AI can enhance user workflows.

We are looking for talented, intellectually curious, and motivated individuals who are interested in tackling the problems above. This is a senior role, but we focus on impact and potential for growth more than years of experience. The salary range for this position is $170,000 - $240,000 USD per year, which is location independent in accordance with our remote-first policy.

Interview Process

Our interview process focuses on evaluating fit for the most important dimensions of the role: product sense, ability to architect backend and distributed systems, and alignment with Hightouch’s values. Notably, we don’t do any programming interviews as we believe they are low signal to noise and aren’t a good evaluation mechanism.

Intro Call [15-30m]: Introductory call with either a member of our recruiting team or the hiring manager to get to know each other and see if the role could be a good mutual fit.
System Design Screen [60m]: Designing a feature end-to-end, including touching the database, API, web frontend, and data warehouse.
Product Sense Interview [60m]: Coming up with potential product and feature ideas in response to customer requirements. Focuses primarily on product solutioning with some technical analysis in determining the feasibility of ideas.
System Design Interview [90m]: Work with the interviewer to architect a system at a conceptual level. The problem will be at a pretty high level - and have both product and customer requirements as well as technical.

The cost are hospitals, schools, data centers, and other infrastructure that could be built, if construction was cheaper en masse.In non-residential construction, for every $100 spent on the construction of our hospitals, schools and highways, about $4 is being wasted on expensive disputes fueled by poorly understood and articulated responsibilities. In an analogous industry, manufacturing, relatively little money is spent on disagreements.It’s been this way for sometime. Construction is an inefficient industry, comparatively and historically. It has lagged behind nearly every other industry in terms of productivity gains for the last 40 years. This is due to several reasons, one of which being current model of risk transfer between parties. We’re looking for a fullstack engineer who has worked on implementing experimental pipelines like langchain, or other experiment/data orientated workloads. Likely not a data scientist or machine learning engineer but rather a software engineer who has worked on product SaaS applications in a data heavy industry.
