Some of the problems we’ll be working on include:

Personalization and Product Recommendation: There are often many options for what content a company could message a user with, including which products to show from catalogues. Given this large state space, how can Hightouch help personalize messages with the most relevant content for each user?
Automated Experimentation: Helping companies intelligently navigate and automate experiments across the extensive number of options for messaging customers.
Predictive Audiences: Building models to predict which users are most likely to convert, churn, or take desired actions.
Content Generation: Particularly with recent advances in LLMs, how can we help marketers generate text, images, and creatives that are compelling to their customers?
Budget Optimization: Helping companies assess which marketing spend is driving the most incremental conversions, and where the marginal CAC is lowest.

As our founding machine learning engineer, you will help build comprehensive solutions to the above domains from scratch. Responsibilities will be highly varied and include working on customer research, problem definition, predictive modeling, machine learning infrastructure, and partnering with customers.

We are looking for talented, intellectually curious, and motivated individuals who are interested in tackling the problems above. This is a senior role, but we focus on impact and potential for growth more than years of experience. The salary range for this position is $200,000 - $250,000 USD per year, which is location independent in accordance with our remote-first policy.

Interview Process

Our interview process focuses on evaluating fit for the most important dimensions of the role: product sense, ability to architect backend and distributed systems, and alignment with Hightouch’s values. Notably, we don’t do any programming interviews as we believe they are low signal to noise and aren’t a good evaluation mechanism.

Intro Call [15-30m]: Introductory call with either a member of our recruiting team or the hiring manager to get to know each other and see if the role could be a good mutual fit.
Machine Learning Modeling Interview [90m]: Designing a predictive model end-to-end, including data collection and preparation, model training and evaluation, and what systems would be needed to run the model in production.
System Design Interview [90m]: Work with the interviewer to architect a system at a conceptual level. The problem will be at a pretty high level - and have both product and customer requirements as well as technical.
Hiring Manager Interview [30m]: Chat with hiring manager about past experiences and future operating preferences to assess fit on company values and operating principles.

## Day in the Life

In a typical week, you’d probably:

- Talk to multiple users of our product at current customers, or new companies we’re piloting with, to see how they’re using it, what they need help with, and what we can build to make them more successful — we believe in being super hands-on, especially in this phase, to help our customers succeed (e.g., we onboard each sales rep 1:1, check-ins, fast feedback loops, etc.)
- Build a piece of the product you’re owning that will produce a step change in value for our customers, and work closely with users to test it out and iterate
- Help figure out what on the roadmap to prioritize next / what new features we can build out to solve issues users are facing or unlock more value
- Help with data onboarding / POC for a new customer, including potentially building out tools (many AI-powered!) to automate this work and make it easier & faster in the future
- Contribute to brainstorming on a top-of-mind GTM question (”what should the pre-sales process look like? what metrics should we anchor on? what kinds of customers should we disqualify earlier and how can we recognize them a priori?”)

FleetWorks automates the 2B phone calls and emails that the freight industry makes every year. We use voice synthesis, generative AI, and integrations with logistics systems to solve the largest cost in this industry - people.When Uber Freight needs to ship a truckload of Coca-Cola going from Phoenix to Bentonville. They can use FleetWorks to call the driver to get an ETA, alert the receiver and shipper that the driver is running late, and reschedule the appointment - all with automated text messages, phone calls, and emails.❌ THE PROBLEM:Getting freight from point A to point B is still largely handled by humans. Digitized brokers have driven automation, but most day-to-day operations are still handled over phone and email between millions of humans around the world. Given this overhead, freight brokerages operate on low single-digit margins.Three roles in a freight brokerage spend a significant part of their day on repetitive tasks:<ol><li>Track and trace agents → Identify loads that are not being tracked automatically via apps, telematics, or aggregators. They reach out via phone or email to the driver or dispatcher for an update.</li><li>Load coverage and carrier sales → Handle inbound/outbound calls to/from trucking companies that are interested to book loads. What you will do:

We use React, Redux and Typescript on the frontend and Django on the backend. Experience with these are preferred but not required.

Specifically, you will:

Own our insights layer: build models and algorithms to generate first-party data. This will include using statistical and machine learning techniques, including LLMs, to generate derived insights as well as determine accurate values from error-prone sources (e.g. headcount information)
Develop data products that improve the discoverability of startups in our database. Create and continually improve the similarity, relevance, and tagging algorithms that power our search engine.
Use your knowledge and creativity to extract as much value out of our data as possible. Make us the most valuable and useful source of information on startups.
Oversee general maintenance and health of data pipelines to ensure accurate and efficient transformations of our data.
Collaborate with the team to devise product goals, outline milestones, and execute plans, achieving this with minimal guidance.

Role requirements:

7+ years in Data Science or Data Engineering, or 5+ years industry experience + PhD
Fluency in Python and SQL
Experience with backend libraries and tools like dbt and dagster, familiarity with web servers, and comfort with large data sets.
Ability to work 3 times/week in our Brooklyn (Williamsburg) office.
Proven track record of shipping major projects for a data-centric startup.

We despise the typical software engineering interview process because it does not align with our day-to-day work. We structured our interview process around pragmatism. Expect us to ask questions closely aligned with the work we expect you to do.

Here’s our interview process:

(30 mins) Introduction Chat: Let's discuss whether Harmonic is the right place for you. We'll review your experience and allocate time for any questions you may have
(30 mins) Hiring Manager Call: Here we focus on accountability, and how much personal ownership one takes of their work.
(Max 5 hours) Take-Home Exercise: We will send you a description of one of our current company challenges and ask you to come up with a creative solution.
(45 minutes each) Team interview: Meet with a member of our Product team to focus on how you would collaborate, and another member of our Engineering team to go over your take-home & conduct a technical assessment.
(2.5 hours) Engineering Jam Session: Detailed discussion of the take-home and digging in deeper to measure technical skills. This will involve coding with 2-3 engineers on our team.
(Async) Reference Checks
(In person) Dinner/Lunch: Get to know Max, our CEO, over dinner! We can only get to know each other so much through video calls. We believe this is a critical hire and believe this investment is necessary. Flight and housing (if needed) are covered.

About the Role

Building upon Reverse ETL’s ability to use SQL to sync to any SaaS tool, Customer Studio is Hightouch’s second major product that provides a purpose-built no-code suite of features that enables anyone, regardless of their SQL experience, to activate data directly from their warehouse. Despite being a small team (3 engineers, 1 PM, 1 designer), Customer Studio is our fastest growing product and already accounts for nearly half of our revenue, which also gives this role the potential to have significant impact!

We’re looking to add a product-minded backend engineer to the team. The ideal candidate will be comfortable diving deep into backend and distributed systems and think holistically about architecture, scalability, maintainability, and reliability. We also are looking for someone with strong customer and product thinking and who feels comfortable writing and engaging with product specs.

Some of the problems we’ll be working on include:

Data Warehouse Performance: We’re consistently pushing the limits of what data warehouses can handle in terms of speed, performance, and interactivity. We explore optimizations generally (e.g. optimizing queries, storing pre-computed state), as well as investigate warehouse-specific improvements.
Analytics and Experimentation: How can Hightouch help customers build segments and decide what data they want to sync? How can we facilitate experimentation to downstream tools, including tracking the performance of different audiences?
Real-time Audience Syncing: Our users are always interested in faster syncing and fresher data. As warehouses become more real-time and adopt technologies like CDC, we’re excited to explore real-time audience computation and syncing.
Generative AI: We’re continuously working on making the user experience of acting on data more seamless, and are optimistic generative AI can enhance user workflows.

We are looking for talented, intellectually curious, and motivated individuals who are interested in tackling the problems above. This is a senior role, but we focus on impact and potential for growth more than years of experience. The salary range for this position is $170,000 - $240,000 USD per year, which is location independent in accordance with our remote-first policy.

Interview Process

Our interview process focuses on evaluating fit for the most important dimensions of the role: product sense, ability to architect backend and distributed systems, and alignment with Hightouch’s values. Notably, we don’t do any programming interviews as we believe they are low signal to noise and aren’t a good evaluation mechanism.

Intro Call [15-30m]: Introductory call with either a member of our recruiting team or the hiring manager to get to know each other and see if the role could be a good mutual fit.
System Design Screen [60m]: Designing a feature end-to-end, including touching the database, API, web frontend, and data warehouse.
Product Sense Interview [60m]: Coming up with potential product and feature ideas in response to customer requirements. Focuses primarily on product solutioning with some technical analysis in determining the feasibility of ideas.
System Design Interview [90m]: Work with the interviewer to architect a system at a conceptual level. The problem will be at a pretty high level - and have both product and customer requirements as well as technical.
Hiring Manager Interview [30m]: Chat with hiring manager about past experiences and future operating preferences to assess fit on company values and operating principles.
