I received an opportunity to work at one of the premier Autonomous Vehicle units in the world, Uber ATG. For a geek like myself who had been following the Autonomous Vehicle sector since I heard of Waymo in 2013, it was an opportunity I couldn't turn down.

In my job function, I had the opportunity to source and recruit a disparate array of engineers. I was tasked with niche searches like Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) engineers. Additionally, I handled Eng Manager, Frontend and Backend searches. 

Some highlights from my time at Uber ATG:
• Placed first in ATG org-wide Decisions-to-Hire (DTH) for Q1 2020 with 8 DTHs.
• Placed second in ATG SWE for H2 2019 with 21 DTHs (OKR 12)
• Hired an L6 Eng Manager in my second month working at Uber.
• Hired two L5A Eng Managers in H2 of 2019.
• Landed 6 DTHs in my second month of ramped-up recruiting (OKR 2)
• Named MVP for the month of November.

Google

While playing on a mens basketball rec team with a bunch of my old college friends, I mentioned that Insurance sales was draining my energy, rather than feeling energized each day after work. My buddy, Matt, mentioned he was at Google as a recruiter. He thought my background in sales and my personality would be a good fit for the recruiting world, and that he would be happy to refer me in, if I was interested. 

I leapt at the opportunity. I had recruited in a limited capacity in my previous role as an Operations Manager for a nonprofit, but I was intrigued by Big Tech recruiting and what that would entail.

Getting my start on the New Grad team was, in hindsight, a real gift. My teammates were incredibly bright and driven, but also provided amazing mentorship and showed me everything I needed to succeed in my day to day function at Google. Once I picked up their internal ATS (GHire), learned how to boolean search appropriately, and understand a cursory amount of the technical jargon...I was off and running!

Some highlights:
• Led team with 70 Offer Accepts (OAs) for Q3 and Q4 combined, accounting for 17.5% of team OA production over both 2018 quarters.
• Set team record with 150 Hiring Committee Approvals during Q3-Q4 (18% increase over previous record).

About the Role

Building upon Reverse ETL’s ability to use SQL to sync to any SaaS tool, Customer Studio is Hightouch’s second major product that provides a purpose-built no-code suite of features that enables anyone, regardless of their SQL experience, to activate data directly from their warehouse. Despite being a small team (3 engineers, 1 PM, 1 designer), Customer Studio is our fastest growing product and already accounts for nearly half of our revenue, which also gives this role the potential to have significant impact!

We’re looking to add a product-minded backend engineer to the team. The ideal candidate will be comfortable diving deep into backend and distributed systems and think holistically about architecture, scalability, maintainability, and reliability. We also are looking for someone with strong customer and product thinking and who feels comfortable writing and engaging with product specs.

Some of the problems we’ll be working on include:

Data Warehouse Performance: We’re consistently pushing the limits of what data warehouses can handle in terms of speed, performance, and interactivity. We explore optimizations generally (e.g. optimizing queries, storing pre-computed state), as well as investigate warehouse-specific improvements.
Analytics and Experimentation: How can Hightouch help customers build segments and decide what data they want to sync? How can we facilitate experimentation to downstream tools, including tracking the performance of different audiences?
Real-time Audience Syncing: Our users are always interested in faster syncing and fresher data. As warehouses become more real-time and adopt technologies like CDC, we’re excited to explore real-time audience computation and syncing.
Generative AI: We’re continuously working on making the user experience of acting on data more seamless, and are optimistic generative AI can enhance user workflows.

We are looking for talented, intellectually curious, and motivated individuals who are interested in tackling the problems above. This is a senior role, but we focus on impact and potential for growth more than years of experience. The salary range for this position is $170,000 - $240,000 USD per year, which is location independent in accordance with our remote-first policy.

Interview Process

Our interview process focuses on evaluating fit for the most important dimensions of the role: product sense, ability to architect backend and distributed systems, and alignment with Hightouch’s values. Notably, we don’t do any programming interviews as we believe they are low signal to noise and aren’t a good evaluation mechanism.

Intro Call [15-30m]: Introductory call with either a member of our recruiting team or the hiring manager to get to know each other and see if the role could be a good mutual fit.
System Design Screen [60m]: Designing a feature end-to-end, including touching the database, API, web frontend, and data warehouse.
Product Sense Interview [60m]: Coming up with potential product and feature ideas in response to customer requirements. Focuses primarily on product solutioning with some technical analysis in determining the feasibility of ideas.
System Design Interview [90m]: Work with the interviewer to architect a system at a conceptual level. The problem will be at a pretty high level - and have both product and customer requirements as well as technical.

## Day in the Life

In a typical week, you’d probably:

- Talk to multiple users of our product at current customers, or new companies we’re piloting with, to see how they’re using it, what they need help with, and what we can build to make them more successful — we believe in being super hands-on, especially in this phase, to help our customers succeed (e.g., we onboard each sales rep 1:1, check-ins, fast feedback loops, etc.)
- Build a piece of the product you’re owning that will produce a step change in value for our customers, and work closely with users to test it out and iterate
- Help figure out what on the roadmap to prioritize next / what new features we can build out to solve issues users are facing or unlock more value
- Help with data onboarding / POC for a new customer, including potentially building out tools (many AI-powered!) to automate this work and make it easier & faster in the future
- Contribute to brainstorming on a top-of-mind GTM question (”what should the pre-sales process look like? what metrics should we anchor on? what kinds of customers should we disqualify earlier and how can we recognize them a priori?”)

Digitized brokers have driven automation, but most day-to-day operations are still handled over phone and email between millions of humans around the world. Given this overhead, freight brokerages operate on low single-digit margins.Three roles in a freight brokerage spend a significant part of their day on repetitive tasks:<ol><li>Track and trace agents → Identify loads that are not being tracked automatically via apps, telematics, or aggregators. We anticipate the base salary band for this role will be between $170,000 to $200,000 in addition to equity and benefits. The salary at offer will be determined by a number of factors such as candidate’s experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity among our team.

Location

Today, about half our team are in Los Angeles and half are fully remote and spread across the U.S. There are two options for this job:

Live in Los Angeles, work a few days a week (or more) out of our beautiful office in the Arts District.
Live wherever, work remotely (Ideally PST hours), and travel to LA (on the company dime) as needed to be with your colleagues —somewhere between monthly and quarterly.

In short: You can do this job well remotely, and we’re committed to empowering everyone with flexibility. But we care a lot about building a great culture and we think some interactions need to happen in person, so we put a lot of thought into retreats, offsites, and other ways to gather.
