LinkedIn reigns supreme as a platform for connecting with candidates and clients.

However, since LinkedIn limits users to 120 connection requests per week, getting in touch with people who aren't already in your network can be a slow process.

In comes InMails, messages credits that you can buy to message people outside your network and start a conversation.

Let's go over what they are.

What are LinkedIn InMails?

LinkedIn InMails are private messages on LinkedIn that allow you to directly connect with other users, even if you aren't already connected with them.

Unlike regular messages, which you can only send to your 1st-degree connections (people you're directly connected with), InMails bypasses this limitation.

How many InMails are included in LinkedIn Recruiter?

If you buy a LinkedIn Recruiter package, you'll be given a certain amount of InMails, however it varies on your package.

Recruiter Lite: 30 per month

Recruiter Corporate: 150 per month

How many characters can you write per InMail?

In an InMail message, you can have up to 200 characters in the subject line and up to 2000 characters in the body.

How much do InMails cost?

In addition to your monthly InMail allowance on Recruiter or Lite, you can purchase more InMails at $10 each.

What are some best practices when using InMails?

InMails are not cheap. So use them wisely. Take the following steps to get the best results when sending InMails:

  • Know your audience: Before crafting your message, take a deep dive into the recipient's profile. What are their interests and expertise? Are there any shared connections you can leverage? Personalization is key. A generic message will likely get lost in the sea of InMails.
  • Craft a captivating subject line: The subject line is your first impression. Keep it concise, clear, and intriguing. Instead of a bland "Hi [Name]," try something like "[Shared Connection] mentioned your work on [Topic]" or "Quick question about your experience in [Industry]."
  • Keep it short and sweet: People are busy. Respect their time with a concise message. Briefly introduce yourself, state your purpose for reaching out, and offer value.
  • End with a Clear Call to Action: What do you want the candidate to do after reading your message? Clearly state your desired outcome, whether it's a call or a connection request.

LinkedIn InMails are powerful tools for building connections. However, if you are consistent with posting relevant content and actively engage with other LinkedIn posts, you can build up a solid network organically.
