About this role

We are looking for a Software Engineer (Applied AI) with 1-8 years of experience to join a small, high-caliber team as a forward-deployed engineer building AI-powered solutions for mid-market alternative investment firms. You'll work alongside three other engineers at a company backed by Primary Ventures and angels like the CTOs of Tiger Global and Marshall Wace. This is a customer-facing role where you'll combine product engineering with hands-on AI development — curating technical roadmaps for clients, building solutions directly with end customers, and shipping production systems using LLMs across every layer of the stack. If you're passionate about the craft of software engineering, comfortable with ambiguity, and want to be the bridge between cutting-edge AI and real business impact, this is your role.

What will you be doing?

  • Work directly with asset managers and their portfolio companies to understand data challenges and build custom AI-powered solutions

  • Own end-to-end product delivery from customer discovery through production deployment using Python, FastAPI, Temporal, and React

  • Curate and manage customer-specific technical roadmaps — part PM, part engineer — ensuring solutions map to real business outcomes

  • Leverage LLMs and AI agents extensively in your daily workflow, building on top of the team's AI-native internal infrastructure

  • Collaborate closely with the founding team in a high-autonomy environment with minimal process overhead and broad ownership

About the team

Rengo AI is a four-person founding team of engineers and a designer, bringing deep fintech and investing expertise from companies like Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, and high-growth startups. CEO Erik Ronning is a software engineer by trade who went from Microsoft to a pre-IPO company, then joined as the second engineer at Mayburn (now Series B), before founding Rengo AI. His co-founder Grant leads the engineering org and serves as the direct manager for new hires.

The team operates with minimal process — lightweight standups, occasional planning sessions, and long stretches of autonomous, heads-down coding. Everyone on the engineering side works across the full data infrastructure stack, and the team has invested heavily in internal tooling that lets engineers run multiple AI agents in parallel to maximize velocity.

Culture-wise, Rengo values high autonomy, comfort with ambiguity, and a genuine passion for the craft of software engineering. They give broad swim lanes of work and expect people to run with problems for weeks at a time with just periodic check-ins. The team is fully on-site five days a week in New York, and they're looking for people who thrive in a small, tight-knit environment where every person has outsized impact.

The product

Rengo AI is a modern data platform purpose-built for alternative investment managers. The product helps general partners at private equity firms, hedge funds, and other asset managers consolidate and structure data from across their entire organization — from financial accounting systems and CRMs to portfolio company data — into a unified, governed infrastructure.

At its core, Rengo ingests data from disparate sources (meetings, documents, spreadsheets, ledgers, and third-party tools), transforms it into typed, related records with full lineage and permissions, and spins up dedicated AWS clusters managed on behalf of each customer. Think of it as bringing the kind of data infrastructure that public market hedge funds take for granted — comparable to what Palantir offers Fortune 500s — to the historically underserved mid-market of private investments, at a significantly lower cost point.

The platform is AI-native: every operation in the system involves LLMs, from data extraction and transformation to structuring unstructured information. Rengo also operates as an applied AI partner, working directly with asset managers and their underlying portfolio companies to set up custom data infrastructure and curate technical roadmaps — creating a unique deployment wedge through the GP-to-portfolio-company relationship.

With private markets expected to surpass $24T by 2028, Rengo is replacing the spreadsheets and legacy tools that managers have relied on with real infrastructure that streamlines operations and lets them focus on delivering returns.
