Staff Applied AI Engineer
$250K–$300K base salary plus competitive equity. Pay is set at San Francisco rates for all US locations, so it doesn't change based on where you live. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and disability insurance, a 401(k), and wellness and learning & development stipends.
We are looking for a Staff-level Applied AI Engineer with 4-10 years of experience to build the AI foundation of Future's new Health Coach product. We want an optimistic, curious engineer who has shipped LLM agents to production, ideally with a strong big-tech background, who has since moved into startups or founded a company. This is a beta-stage, fast-changing environment, so you'll need to work independently and drive results. Future is backed by a board that includes Tom Brady, Eddie Cue and Adam Bain, and has a CPTO from Function Health. Your work will turn members' biomarkers, DEXA scans and wearable data into personalized guidance that their human coaches can act on.
What will you be doing?
Building and shipping production AI agents for Health Coach: tool-calling LLM systems with structured output, parallel API orchestration and streaming responses.
Building AI-driven features such as coach matching and clinical-leaning guidance across sleep, nutrition, fitness and wellness, with a human always in the loop.
Owning the full loop: prototyping new agent capabilities, validating them with Langfuse evals and rubrics for safety, effectiveness and personalization, then deploying, monitoring traces and iterating.
Improving reliability, latency and cost through prompt caching, token budgets, retry logic and observability.
Writing the tools agents use (Pydantic-validated API integrations, data search and structured submissions) and working closely with product, design, mobile and backend engineers in an EPD pod.
