BioRender is revolutionizing scientific communication by enabling researchers to easily create and share professional scientific illustrations. Founded by a former National Geographic scientific illustrator, our platform has become the industry standard for creating compelling scientific visualizations, helping scientists eliminate the steep learning curve of complex design tools.
Role Overview
We're seeking a Senior Product Designer (with potential for Staff/Lead level for exceptional candidates) to join our product team, reporting directly to John Fan, our Head of Product. In this role, you'll own the full design process for key features of our scientific visualization platform, working cross-functionally to shape the future of how scientists communicate their work visually.
You'll be joining a seasoned team of product designers, each owning different aspects of our product, collaborating to maintain the high design standards that are core to our company's DNA. This is an opportunity to work on a unique product at the intersection of design tools, scientific visualization, and collaboration software.
Responsibilities
Lead the end-to-end design process for significant product features, from initial research and ideation through to implementation and post-launch optimization
Create comprehensive design documentation that articulates your strategic thinking, process, and decision-making rationale
Develop and refine user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs with exceptional visual craft
Contribute to and help evolve our design system to ensure scalability and consistency
Incorporate user research and testing insights to validate design decisions and drive iterations
Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and other cross-functional team members
Participate in design critique sessions and provide constructive feedback to peers
Explore and champion AI-powered features that enhance scientific visualization and collaboration
Stay current with industry trends and best practices in design tools and visualization techniques
Candidates must share their portfolio before the interview process begins. Your portfolio should include:
2-3 full case studies demonstrating your design process
Clear explanation of your role, team dynamics, research approach, and success metrics
Evidence of your problem-solving process and decision-making rationale
High-quality examples of final designs and implementations

OUR STORY
Our CEO and Co-founder, Shiz Aoki, was the Lead Medical Illustrator for National Geographic for a decade. Her illustrations brought science to life, capturing the minds and hearts of millions around the world.
After starting a medical illustration firm in Toronto, Canada, Shiz began to see a growing need for scientists to be able to visually communicate their science. As research visualization became more commonplace in the life sciences, more scientists approached her firm. Unable to keep up with demand, Shiz would be forced to turn scientists away, knowing that many wouldn’t have the resources to create their own illustrations.
So, In 2017, Shiz partnered up with Katya Shteyn and Ryan Marien to start BioRender, with the vision of empowering scientists to quickly, consistently make their own medical illustrations.
Today, we are a venture-backed startup and graduate of Y Combinator. We have users in over 100 countries around the world, and have built up a library of icons and templates from over 30 fields of biology. We’re passionate about science communication and driven to build an intuitive, practical product that empowers scientists to share their passion with the world.
