About this role

We are looking for an Director of Engineering - AI Agents with 7+ years of experience to own and scale FurtherAI's AI organization. You'll lead the team building production LLM-powered agents that automate critical workflows in the trillion-dollar insurance industry. This is a rare opportunity to join a fast-growing, a16z-backed startup as the engineering leader who shapes the technical direction of the entire AI org. Both founders are engineers, and you'll have an outsized say on product direction while building your team from the ground up.

What will you be doing?

  • Own and grow the AI org, scaling it into three teams: AI infrastructure (routing & reliability), Agent intelligence (evals, shared tools, multimodal pipelines), and Agentic products (customer-facing AI assistant, long-running workflows)

  • Set technical direction for building agents that hold up in real production on real customer money — including model routing, multi-agent orchestration, and reliability

  • Recruit, mentor, and retain a world-class team of AI engineers, hiring the leaders beneath you as the org scales post-Series A

  • Stay deeply technical — still in the code and architecture, setting the bar by example

  • Push the frontier of what AI agents can do for insurance as the field evolves

About the team

FurtherAI's London team is being built from the ground up as the company's first international expansion. Led by Tom Bradley, Head of UK/EMEA, the London office represents a founding opportunity to shape how FurtherAI delivers its domain-specific AI platform to the UK and European insurance markets.

The broader FurtherAI team is a tight-knit, high-performing group of ~30 people headquartered in San Francisco. The Go-to-Market side of the house works hand-in-hand with engineering and product — there's no rigid separation between functions. The current Insurance AI Solutions Lead in the US, Danny, exemplifies the culture: he's on socials creating content, in front of customers building relationships, shaping the product, and supporting across the entire business. Everyone wears multiple hats.

What defines the team culture:

  • High energy & hunger — this is a team of builders who tear down walls, show up with intensity, and thrive on ambiguity. Reserved or purely strategic operators don't fit here.

  • Collaborative & low ego — people jump in wherever they're needed, from pre-sales demos to product prototyping to customer support.

  • Customer-obsessed — the team embeds deeply with insurance clients, earning trust through domain credibility and delivering measurable ROI from day one.

  • Founding mentality — backed by a16z, Y Combinator, and top-tier investors, the team operates with the urgency and ownership of true founders. The London office is expected to grow to ~20 people over the next 12–18 months.

If you want a clear, pre-defined career ladder — this isn't the place. If you want to shape your own trajectory as a founding member of a new market, work directly with leadership, and build something from scratch — this is it.

The product

FurtherAI builds a domain-specific AI Workspace purpose-built for the insurance industry. The platform automates complex, traditionally manual workflows — including submission intake, policy comparisons, and underwriting audits — enabling insurance teams to work faster, smarter, and more efficiently.

Rather than a generic AI tool, FurtherAI deeply understands insurance-specific processes and integrates smoothly into how teams already operate. A workflow that previously took an underwriter 6–8 hours (like processing a submission) can now be completed in as little as 10–15 minutes, delivering immediate, measurable ROI.

The platform follows a land-and-expand model: customers start with one specific use case, see instant value, and then expand across multiple workflows and business units. FurtherAI supports customers writing over $15B in premiums across all 50 US states, serving leading insurers, reinsurers, MGAs, and brokers.
