About the role

We are looking for a senior frontend-leaning fullstack engineer eager to take over large swaths of our greenfield product roadmap. As one of our early senior hires, you will partner closely with our founders on the direction of our product and drive business-critical technical decisions. You will also ship major product initiatives that fundamentally change the way that Data Scientists and Analysts operate, and have ample technical and team leadership opportunities, depending on your interests.

We aim to deliver an intuitive, delightful experience that is as empowering as it is pleasing to the eye and we have plenty of challenges at all levels of the stack. Some interesting challenges you could work on include:

Designing and building collaborative multiplayer editing of notebooks and applications, including conflict resolution and commenting systems.
Scaling rich, interactive, customizable components to provide a performant, pleasant experience from ten to a hundred or more notebook cells.
Representing complex concepts (e.g. caching, kernel execution state) in a digestible UX that is understandable for users from a variety of backgrounds.

The team: Nooks is ~45 people. Engineering & product are mostly in SF and go to our office 2-3x/week. The go-to-market team is distributed across the U.S.
The founders (Dan, Rohan, and Nikhil) met studying AI at Stanford, have published in top AI journals, Forbes 30u30, worked at Scale AI, Tesla Autopilot, etc.
The engineering team has won international math & physics olympiads, has experience at Google, Facebook, Slack, Quora, Scale AI, Bolt, Snap, Flexport, and other fast-growing startups.

The problem
Sales pipeline is critical for growing companies. Many, especially B2B companies, have teams of sales/business development representatives (SDR/BDRs) or full-cycle account executives whose responsibility is to identify, contact, and qualify new potential customers. There are ~750,000 SDR/BDR’s in the US alone (e.g. Airtable, Brex, Databricks and many other tech companies have sizable SDR/BDR teams)

In their day-to-day, SDR/BDRs spend time on 3 main activities:

Prospecting & research - identify a list of potential customers using signals like industry, size, fundraising, headcount growth, new hires, job descriptions, etc.
Email & LinkedIn messaging - write messages to those contacts to convey the problem and pitch your product. The goal is for them to book a demo
Calling - Live phone conversations often have higher conversion than emails because they’re more personal, but there’s a lot more manual work involved
Most of the sales rep’s job can be automated with today’s technology: large language models, web scraping, automation, integrations, etc.
Nooks today
Our customers use Nooks for most of their day (avg ~3hrs/business day). Nooks currently owns end-to-end workflows around sales calls:

AI dialer - automates the manual parts of the calling process: skipping answering machines, leaving voicemails, taking notes, logging calls, even figuring out what to say on a call
Analytics - we record, transcribe, and analyze every call. Since these are all outbound calls with little context, these calls follow similar structure - opener, pitch, questions/objections, ask for meeting, etc. So we can answer questions like: “which reps struggle to book the meeting with prospects who showed interest” or “what are the most common objections across each of our key personas”
Salesfloor - sales reps & managers can work together throughout the day, listen to each others’ calls, give real-time advice, coaching, shadowing, onboarding, training.

Examples of engineering problems we’re working on
These are just examples, this list is non-exhaustive, and you definitely don’t need experience in all of these areas. But hopefully you find some of them exciting!

Concurrency & distributed systems
Our smart dialer places calls in parallel and runs a realtime AI model on each call. There are some interesting concurrency problems syncing state between Twilio, our backend, and the frontend, and knowing which calls to connect, which to continue in the background, and when to start the next call.
Realtime audio AI & precision/recall/latency tradeoffs (algorithms & models)
We use audio data, transcription, silence detection, and several other signals to detect whether a live phone call is a voicemail, a human, or a dial tree. Here, latency is a third factor added to the standard precision/recall tradeoff because it’s important we can detect humans quickly. Our approach involves LLM embeddings, few-shot learning, data labeling, and continuous monitoring of model performance in prod.
Latency (infrastructure)
If our model took 5 seconds to detect a human on a phone call, the human would hang up. It’s imperative we can detect quickly and that our users can execute calls quickly. There’s latency across the detection pipeline including transcription models, audio models, websockets, Twilio API, database transactions, etc.
Smart call funnels & playbooks (data wrangling, backend eng, GPT-3, UX)
At what point in the conversation do my reps get stuck? What are the toughest questions that we need to address? Can I “program” a playbook so that Nooks will help my team standardize toward best-practices? We’re using GPT-3 and other LLM’s to turn companies’ mostly unstructured call data into actionable strategies & feedback loops.
Conversation embeddings & markov models (ML modeling)
What does the anatomy of a call look like? If I say XYZ, what are the different ways the prospect might answer and the probabilities of each? Conditioned on the first half of the call, what do I say next to maximize the likelihood that I book a demo at the end of the call? Can we use LLM’s to generate embeddings of conversations that we can use to cluster similar conversation patterns and predict where the conversation is headed?
Integrations
Our dialer integrates with customers’ sales engagement platforms. Every new platform we integrate with, that opens up a larger market for our product. When building integrations, we need to make sure they’re robust, reliable, and well-abstracted.
Frontend performance
There’s a lot going on in the frontend - WebRTC, Twilio, React rendering, websockets, etc. And people use Nooks throughout the workday, so we need to make sure our app is performant across a wide range of devices
Requirements
5+ years of experience as a software engineer or in a related technical role
Ability to work with our stack:

As an Infrastructure Engineer at Orb, you will be responsible for designing and maintaining product features that require deeply understanding reliable and scalable systems. The infrastructure team works on every part of the stack and ships product quickly. Orb has a broad range of infrastructure challenges that you’ll tackle in concert with our team. Some examples of work you might do at Orb include:

Building and scaling our data ingestion pipelines to support ever increasing data volumes. We ingest anywhere from 100 million to one billion events an hour and expect to see massive growth over the next year. These data pipelines need to be incredibly robust; the accuracy of every event counts.

Understanding how to scale query throughput against our specialized datastores in service of product features like real-time alerting while maintaining maximum flexibility in metrics customers can define. This allows our customers to implement usage limits and spend management through Orb.

Providing the most performant and flexible APIs to our customers and their end users, so they can build experiences that leverage usage data stored in Orb.

Building simple and reusable system-level components to serve as a foundation for other engineers. For example, designing and building a robust rate and cost limiting strategy across Orb’s API.

We use voice synthesis, generative AI, and integrations with logistics systems to solve the largest cost in this industry - people.When Uber Freight needs to ship a truckload of Coca-Cola going from Phoenix to Bentonville. They can use FleetWorks to call the driver to get an ETA, alert the receiver and shipper that the driver is running late, and reschedule the appointment - all with automated text messages, phone calls, and emails.❌ THE PROBLEM:Getting freight from point A to point B is still largely handled by humans. Digitized brokers have driven automation, but most day-to-day operations are still handled over phone and email between millions of humans around the world. Given this overhead, freight brokerages operate on low single-digit margins.Three roles in a freight brokerage spend a significant part of their day on repetitive tasks:<ol><li>Track and trace agents → Identify loads that are not being tracked automatically via apps, telematics, or aggregators. They reach out via phone or email to the driver or dispatcher for an update.</li><li>Load coverage and carrier sales → Handle inbound/outbound calls to/from trucking companies that are interested to book loads. Information like weight, commodity, and appointment time is shared. Then the parties negotiate on price.</li><li>Appointment schedulers → Set appointment times for unscheduled loads by calling or emailing facilities, or logging into customer portals. Due to unforeseen issues, 20-30% of appointments need to be rescheduled at the last minute resulting in even more work.</li></ol>✨ OUR SOLUTION:FleetWorks sits alongside a broker’s phone, email, and transportation management system (TMS). Calls and emails can be triggered automatically or manually, and relevant information is automatically pushed to the TMS or email for operators to take action.FleetWorks can automatically<ol><li>Book loads: Share load details, discuss price, and book the carrier.</li><li>Track loads: Call the driver and update the account team on issues.</li><li>Schedule appointments: Email or call facilities that don’t have a booking portal.</li></ol>💲 THE OPPORTUNITY:There are 150 large brokers in the U.S. (&gt;$100M gross revenue) and they are taking share from small brokers. These brokers alone spend $11B on operational headcount and 70% of headcount is involved in repetitive work.These operators conduct 1 billion phone calls per year to manage load execution. Today, these calls cost $5-15 depending on complexity. At a rate of $1 per successful call (10x cheaper than the status quo), we believe our near-term market opportunity is $1B.Given the $11B of spend on operational headcount, FleetWorks provides significant margin expansion for our customers.

About the interview

At FleetWorks, we seek engineers who excel in customer interaction, rapid iteration, and product ownership. Our engineers drive their roadmap and MVP development, emphasizing full-stack work, analysis, and customer interaction. Our interview process is tailored to identify such engineers, with a focus on product-oriented questions relevant to our work.

Interview Process Overview:

Phone Screen: An informal call to assess your fit for the role and FleetWorks' startup environment. We look for a strong startup interest, demonstrated by past experience.
Technical Screens: Two remote sessions to evaluate programming skills and UI experience.
Interview Process: A deep dive into technical abilities, product thinking, and fit.
Debugging: Fixing code and communicating the process.
Whiteboard: Solving coding questions and discussing solutions.
Database/Schema Design: Designing database schemas with a focus on Postgres.
Product Thinking: Discussion on feature building and decision making.
Final Interviews: In-person interviews in SF, covering compensation, benefits, and general matters. Lunch is provided to meet the team.

Timing: The process typically takes a month, but we can expedite for candidates with competing offers or time constraints.
